Atlantic Beach Splash Pad

Atlantic Beach Splash Pad

A Saturday with Jett

When your husband is out of town and you are left with two littles you MUST be creative to pass the time. So I packed up the boys and decided to venture for the first time to the Atlantic Beach Splash Pad. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Image result for splash

I was concerned at first that there was no way I could keep a 3 month old and a nearly 2 year old (2 in December) occupied and well cared for alone. But the Splash pad is well away from the parking area and surrounded by a mini golf entrance and THREE, that’s right three playground areas. It was like kiddie heaven.

Daschel slept in his baby back pack, what I lovingly call the kangaroo pouch with 8 million buckles, the entire time. Thank goodness. And Jettson was pretty shy for all of about 2 minutes, after the initial shock of cold water splashing in his face. But on a nice partly cloudy day on the beach, any kind of water is good water.

The Splash pad is for ages 12 and under and the entire time I was there dozens of children cycled through for various time frames. Some from out of town who make it a point to visit and lots of locals. There are benches around the circumference of the pad for parents to enjoy a break. I kid you not, if your child is not a darter you can literally take a seat and watch them enjoy themselves, as many parents opted to do.

So please take some time to enjoy it! You and your kids won’t be disappointed.

Explore the newest community to call home!

Beaufort was established in 1709, making it the third oldest town in North Carolina and known for its rich history and coastal charm.  Nestled around Shackleford Banks & Bogue Banks, Beaufort is the most south eastern town in North Carolina.  Although this small town is just under 6 square miles, Beaufort offers a variety of delicious restaurants, historical interests, beautiful scenery and breathtaking sunsets along Taylor’s Creek.

Don’t let the size of this small town fool you, Beaufort offers a vast amount of activities and fun for all ages. Take a ride around town on the big red double-decker bus and learn all about Beaufort’s fascinating history, hear the stories behind many of the buildings and homes with historical plaques, walk through the historical grounds to see the locals reenact the life of the early settlers, explore the Old Burying Grounds & hear the captivating narratives of the ones who were put to rest there, visit the Maritime Museum & Watercraft Center to discover life on the coast & boat building techniques, stop by some of the local boutiques or sit back on the boardwalk overlooking Taylors Creek and enjoy live music while having dinner and drinks are just a few things to do in town. One interesting fact for adults and exciting piece of history for kids is that Beaufort was actually one of the places Edward Teach resided…. or more commonly known as “Blackbeard the Pirate”. Every year to celebrate the pirate heritage in Beaufort, they have the Pirate Invasion festival. This is fun-filled event is for all ages to dress up like a pirate, learn about pirates, have pretend sword fights and watch a group reenact the lives of pirates on land and on water with the Meka II, replica pirate ship owned by Sinbad the Pirate.

Beaufort is not only known for what can be found in town but also along its enchanting waters.  This seaside community is renowned for its amazing boating opportunities (both motor boating and sailing), kayaking, fishing, delicious seafood and incredible wildlife.  Hop on a small ferry boat for a scenic boat ride along Taylors Creek and see different types of wildlife including a variety of birds, herons & gulls flying around, several types of crabs along the shore, a fish being reeled in, a pod of dolphins swimming by and a local favorite, the Carrot Island horses.  These horses along with the Shackleford Banks horses date back to the 1700’s Spanish horses that were brought over on ships.  The ships would run aground near the land and the horses were among some of the animals that would swim to shore.  It is a stunning site to see these magnificent wild horses in a natural setting.

Gorgeous weather and a beautiful picturesque waterfront make Beaufort the perfect destination for family-friendly fun and creates a fantastic atmosphere for the many festivals, concerts and tours held throughout the year.  The calendar of events in downtown Beaufort has a little for everyone ranging from the Beaufort Food & Wine Festival in April, the Wooden Boat Show & Boatbuilding Challenge the first weekend in May, Beaufort Music Festival the third weekend in May, the Beaufort Old Homes & Gardens Tour in June, the Pirate Invasion the second weekend in August and is the host of art shows, wine tastings, live music, farmers’ market and much, much more. *

With so much to offer in such a quaint little community, it is no surprise Beaufort has been nationally recognized as “The Coolest Small Town” with several different publications.

59th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament

59th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament

Back in 1956, sailors from cargo ships that came to the Morehead City port would tell the locals they had seen blue marlin not too far offshore. Many did not believe them and thought this was chatter; however, some were wishful thinkers and hoped that these stories were true. These optimists were members of Morehead City’s Fabulous Fishermen Club.

Bob and Mary Simpson, Tom Potter and Dick Parker – charter members of the Fabulous Fishermen Club – convinced local business leaders to put up a cash prize of a few hundred dollars to encourage the area’s charter boat industry to head further offshore to find these blue marlins. Parker, who frequently fished for billfish in the Caribbean, knew what a blessing this would be to the waterfront’s charter boat business.

The prize money that they had raised was what really did the trick – boats traveled further offshore in search of these elusive fish. Soon, captains and fishermen alike began reporting their own blue marlin sightings. Although throughout the summer of 1957 no blue marlins were caught, the hunt continued.

It was in the September of 1957, Jimmy Croy of Raleigh fishing aboard the Mary Z with Captain K.W. “Bill” Olsen, reeled in a 143-pound marlin. This catch forever changed the face of fishing along the North Carolina coast. Capt. Olsen radioed back to the Morehead City port and word of this historical catch spread like wildfire across the small town. When the Mary Z finally docked back at the port, the boat and crew were greeted by a herd of people and blaring police sirens. There was a child’s red wagon filled with silver dollars that was presented to the lucky fishermen.

No one knows exactly where Olsen and Croy made their historic catch, most think that the two had reached the Gulf Stream – about 40-60 miles south of the Morehead City port. As the Gulf Stream drifts north along the NC coastline, it crosses a structure on the continental shelf called “Big Rock” from which the tournament takes its name. This is a haven for small reef fish – the type that attract the larger fish that blue marlin prey on.

Early on, the competition consisted of a handful of charter boat captains hoping to win a few dollars and the bragging rights that came with a Big Rock victory. Currently, hundreds of fishermen participate, representing the best marlin anglers in the world. The Big Rock has become the “Super Bowl” of fishing because of the way winners feel after capturing the event. The tournament is wild and unpredictable, but it always holds the promise of a big payday. It attracts competitors to come back, year after year, and has grown exponentially.

It all started in 1957 with one lucky catch. The competition for many years offered a huge purse, but that’s  not the true satisfaction of the competition. Billfish captains want to be crowned Big Rock champions and set their sights of the Big Rock competition every year. It is truly a one-of-a-kind Gulf Stream fishing tradition that always seems to all come down to one lucky catch.

Run Off came out on top as the Big Rock Champions with a record $1,161,450 prize at the 59th annual tournament. Run Off weighed in a 533.8-pound blue marlin, the first marlin of the tournament, caught early on Monday by angler Matt Hanley of Glen Allen, VA. Hanley’s catch stayed at the top of the leader board the rest of the way. Captain Brian Harrington, Morehead City, and first mate, Marty Hiatt, teamed with Hanley to reel in his first-ever blue marlin.

Hanley’s catch initially won $467,500 on Monday because it was the first 500-pounder caught by a team in their division. Run Off also received an additional $693,950 for finishing first with the largest blue marlin.

Run Off took home a record-breaking prize of $1.16 million!

“Join us for a great time of baking, laughter, and a little wine”

-The Accidental Bakery

Last Wednesday night a group of friends reserved our spot for the sweet and savory scone baking class. We took up 5 of the 10 spots for the class. A few of us, including me, had no idea what to expect. I enjoy cooking and baking but never even thought about making scones before. When we arrived Jennings had a printed list of supplies, ingredients and step by step instructions for guest person.

After going over the ingredients and tools she showed us how to go about following the steps. We all watched and asked questions along the way. Then it was our turn. We worked together and with Jennings to make our sweet scone first. Grading the butter, adding the chocolate chips of course and being very gentle. Jennings key word is gentle. Once we cut the “pie” we placed our 8 sweet scones on the baking sheet.

Then to our savory scones. Same process with a few different amount of ingredients and of course added cheese. Jennings offered us to add some cayenne pepper, for more taste. Graded butter, mixed gentle and cut into 8 scones. We add egg wash to give the savory scones a shine. Off to the oven they went. As we waited for our scones to bake, we mingled, explored the bakery/shop and enjoyed a little wine.

When the scones finished cooking, out of the oven they came to cool. The sweet scones had some powder sugar glazed added, for a little extra sweetness. 2 hours of baking went by so fast; learning, spending time with friends and of course learning how to bake scones. My friends and I have already discussed going back to try out another class. What a fun night with friends. A great break to a vacation or a regular routine for vocals. You must check it out, and all the bake goods are amazing!

Loggerhead sea turtle

Loggerhead Sea Turtles

Turtle Tracks

There are only seven species of sea turtles worldwide, and six are listed as threatened or endangered in the United States. Of these seven species, the most common in North Carolina is the loggerhead sea turtle. Only loggerhead, green, and leather-back sea turtles lay their eggs on North Carolina beaches. However, Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach are very well known for being the home of the loggerhead sea turtle.

When a mother loggerhead sea turtle is ready to lay her eggs, she will migrate to the shore. In ocean waters close to the Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach nesting sands, females will mate with one or more males, and roughly one month later are ready to lay their eggs. Females nest several times in a single season, but will only nest every second or third year. These mothers generally emerge from the ocean at night to lay their eggs as a way to avoid daytime predators and the hot summer sun. Once she is on the beach, she may take an hour or more to carefully dig her nest approximately 18 inches deep in the sand. Each time they nest, the mother loggerheads lay upwards of 100 leathery eggs in this hole, cover them with sand, and then return to the ocean, leaving the eggs to incubate on the beach. After about two months, the baby turtles will start to make their way into the world. The hatchlings will emerge from the nest and scramble to the ocean where they remain for about 15 to 30 years to then return to our Crystal Coast and lay eggs of their own.

Sea turtles can live to be over 50 years old; however, they have a very low survival rate. Only about one in 1,000 babies will live to have hatchlings of their own. Many sea turtle populations are declining. The existing seven species face different dangers, both on our Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach nesting areas and in the ocean. Some of the threats this endangered species encounters in North Carolina include but are not limited to:

  1. Development and heavy traffic on beaches (that’s us!) that can disturb adults or destroy incubating eggs.
  2. Indirect capture by our fishermen in nets, which can lead to injury or death.
  3. Accidental collisions with our boaters’ vessels.
  4. Beach clean-up and re-nourishment activities that can uncover or compact sea turtle nests.
  5. Our litter! General ocean pollution hurts these beautiful creatures when they return to the crystal blue waters of our coast.

Our Beautiful Ocean – Please Do Not Litter

Nesting and Hatching

Emerald Isle & Atlantic Beach host a Sea Turtle Protection Program with over 100 volunteers! They help to locate and protect the nest sites and help the babies return to the surf. They walk the entire Emerald Isle (12.5 mi) and Atlantic Beach (4.5 mi)shores early every morning during this season searching for evidence of sea turtles coming ashore during the night to lay her eggs.

Biologists and volunteers mark and observe nests. The nest sites are marked off by flagging tape and a large yellow post with the nest number on it. Because these are a threatened and endangered species, the Program is not permitted to advertise the exact locations of nests nor the dates of hatching. However, the stakes and flagging are clearly visible along the beach – just look back towards the dunes, but don’t go too close!

Look Towards the Dunes – You May See a Marked Sea Turtle Nest! But, don’t go too close!

Around the time of hatching, volunteers dig a trench about two feet wide to help guide the baby sea turtles to the ocean. Please do not disturb these trenching areas – these trenches will help guide the hatchlings toward the ocean if the volunteers are not there to help. No one knows the exact time the babies will come out of the nest, so once the trench has been dug, the volunteers will start sitting at the nest from dusk to midnight.

Once they are ready and the area is cool and quiet, the nest will start to “boil” – the sand will look like a boiling pot of water! The baby loggerheads will come up from under the sand, generally in a group. They will venture down to our crystal waters and learn to swim with the current, be a good navigator, be well traveled, and most importantly – age gracefully.

The volunteers do not touch the hatchlings – they just guide them to the ocean. These newborn sea turtles will go towards the brightest thing they see – they are guided to the ocean at night by the glistening light of the moon shining onto the surface of the crashing, foaming waves.

What You Can Do To Help

REMOVE all tents, toys, and beach gear overnight!

FILL IN ALL HOLES that you, your children, and even your dogs may dig – mother turtles can get stuck AND people at night can be seriously injured!

KEEP OUTSIDE LIGHTS OFF AT NIGHT – they disturb nesting mother turtles and distract hatching baby turtles toward the light but away from the ocean which is where they need to go!

Please STAY BACK AT LEAST 30 FEET. NO FLASHLIGHTS OR FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY … If you see a nesting or hatching sea turtle please STAY QUIET, sit down, and enjoy the show! You are witnessing something amazing happening!

PICK UP TRASH, especially plastic bags – turtles think that they are jellyfish which is their main food source and eat them and get sick!

CALL THE POLICE at (252) 354-2021 [Emerald Isle] or (252) 726-2523 [Atlantic Beach] if you see a nesting or hatching turtle or anyone disturbing a marked turtle nest area!
