VSA, vacationer supported agriculture, Fresh Local Shrimp and Produce

You can now order fresh, local shrimp and produce conveniently while you’re on vacation.

As a Bluewater guest, you can now participate in Vacationer Supported Agriculture (VSA). VSA products are supplied by local farmers and shrimpers in partnership with NC State University and local community organizations.

How it Works

How Your Fresh, Local Shrimp and Produce Order is Prepared

Your bags will be prepared by Carteret Local Food Network in Carteret County, which will aggregate produce from several member farms. The bags are filled and made available for pickup on Tuesday afternoons at a convenient location near your vacation rental. Each bag will contain a little more than 10 pounds of fresh produce, fruit, and herbs.  This typically amounts to 12 servings of fruit and vegetables for the week.

  1. Choose your weeks
  2. Add produce, shrimp, and/or eggs to your cart
  3. Choose your pick-up location: Atlantic Beach or Emerald Isle
  4. Place your order and pick it up when ready

About People First Provisions

People-First Provisions is a business unit of People-First Tourism Inc., NC State University’s first tech-based social startup. P1t has been connecting discerning travelers with genuine experiences provided by local people in destination communities in North Carolina and internationally since 2012 (www.peoplefirsttourism.com).

In 2018 their company started collaborating with NC State’s Vacationer Supported Agriculture project (www.forktofarmer.com/vsa) to make bags of local produce available to vacationers on the NC coast. NC State’s project team and county Extension partners coordinate groups of local farmers in the growing, packaging, and delivery of bags of local produce to pick-up locations convenient to vacationers. In turn, they collaborate with select vacation rental companies to market the bags to vacationers.

You can read more about their story on their website at People First Provisions.
