The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is one of the largest and most anticipated events on the Crystal Coast, drawing thousands of spectators and even celebrities from across the nation to experience the excitement of tournament week. The History

In 1956, sailors docking in Morehead City claimed to see blue marlin offshore. Locals were doubtful, but members of the Fabulous Fishermen Club—Bob and Mary Simpson, Tom Potter, and Dick Parker—believed them. They convinced business leaders to offer a small cash prize to encourage charter boats to fish farther out. 

 Though no marlin were caught that summer, the effort paid off in September when Jimmy Croy of Raleigh, aboard the Mary Z with Capt. K.W. “Bill” Olsen, landed a 143-pound blue marlin. The catch made local history. When they returned to port, they were met by a crowd, police sirens, and a red wagon full of silver dollars. 

 Most believe the catch happened near “Big Rock,” a structure along the continental shelf in the Gulf Stream, 40–60 miles offshore. It’s a hotspot for reef fish, which attract blue marlin. 

 What began as a few hopeful captains chasing bragging rights has grown into a global event. Today, the Big Rock is one of the most prestigious marlin tournaments in the world—a Crystal Coast tradition that still comes down to one lucky catch.
