Keeping Watch 24/7

For over 50 years, the U.S Coast Guard Stations at Fort Macon & Emerald Isle have been patrolling our waters and saving lives along the North Carolina Coast. Coast Guard Base Fort Macon itself is comprised of over 200 active duty personnel, 85 reservists, and over 1,200 auxiliary members.

In need of our help

We are approaching the month-long mark of the Government Shutdown. Based in the lapse of Federal Funding, enlisted members in the U.S Coast Guard are still required to work without pay. This has a significant impact in the everyday lives of thousands of people, so we want to do what we can to help enrich the lives of the men and women who serve to keep us protected along the waterways we all enjoy. These crews work around the clock to keep watch of our oceans and keep us safe. With a lapse in funding, not only are the home-lives of these Guardsmen effected- but the duty stations are in need of supplies as well.

Items Needed Include:

  • Ingredients for spaghetti, other pasta dishes
  • Chicken breast
  • Hamburger and buns
  • Hot dogs and buns
  • Prepared meals like: lasagna, pizzas
  • Canned soups
  • Pretzels, chips, crackers
  • Granola bars, cereal, muffins
  • Eggs, milk, sausage/bacon
  • Gatorade, juice, milk, coffee

Please bring your donations to either of our Bluewater Real Estate Offices and we will coordinate with the Coast Guard stations for delivery. We thank you for your help, and thank the hardworking Coast Guard community for their commitment to serving our country.

Help Keep NC Homeowners Insurance Rates Down

NC Homeowners Alliance

The NC Homeowners Alliance works to protect the interests of property owners in the NC General Assembly, while increasing awareness of issues and potential legislation that directly affect consumers’ most important and often most valuable investment: their home.

The Alliance supports common-sense measures that are geared to improving the everyday lives of all North Carolinians. In order to increase the state economy and defend the rights of its citizens, the General Assembly should support legislation that will protect the rights of the millions on NC property owners and encourage more home-ownership, while keep home and property insurance rates fair and affordable.

If you’d like to help take part in our grassroots efforts to protect the rights of property owners, join the Alliance here. You won’t get spammed, as the Alliance is committed to sending information strictly deemed relevant and interesting. We’ll keep you up to date on legislation that will affect your bottom line, such as new rules for insurance rates, your mortgage interest deduction, and local development initiatives. They’ll also let you know about opportunities for to meet with legislators, advocate on their behalf, and make your voice heard in regards to your home and its insurance costs.

Action Needed!

With help from the NC Homeowners Alliance last year, we were able to convince Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey to block an unreasonable homeowners insurance rate hike. The increase would’ve brought the proposed average to over 18%. The Comission heard the outcry and responded to only a 4% increase for most homeowners. We need your help to do it again!

The latest proposal from insurance companies would increase rates by an average of 17.4 percent, but for some consumers the increase could exceed 30 PERCENT!

Please let your voice be heard and tell Commissioner Causey to SAY NO to the insurance companies’ request. You can easily send an email to Commissioner Causey by following this link. You’ll just need to input your information, and a pre-drafted E-mail will send in just a few seconds. If you’d prefer to craft your own message, you can send it over via E-mail to or drop a letter in the mail to:

Improvements Coming to Public Accesses

Atlantic Beach

When sweet summertime rolls around, some beach-goers in Atlantic Beach will have a easy access to get their happy place. Thanks to a grant from the N.C Division of Coastal Management- the heavily used Public Beach Access, located just East of the Doubletree by Hilton. This is great news for owners of the Townhomes and Duplex Units at Seaside Villas, as the new community is located directly across the street.

The $47,852 from the Grant will be used to cover half of the cost of the project, while the remainder will be split between the Town of AB and the Doubletree to cover the additional costs. The bidding process will begin in February, with work beginning shortly thereafter. The project is estimated to see completion prior to the ‘Unofficial’ kickoff to summer- also known as Memorial Day Weekend, which is May 25-26.

The initial plans for the project are to make the walkway compliant with the American Disabilities Act. The materials used will be Trex Board, rather than traditional wood- which is less likely to splinter, requires less maintenance and lasts longer- ultimately reducing the long-term cost of upkeep.

Cape Carteret

A Soundside Access in the Western end of Carteret County is also going to benefit from the State’s Coastal Grant program. The Town of Cape Carteret will receive over $114,000 in Grant Funding in order to purchase a nearly 1.5 Acre piece of property that will ultimately provide access to the popular fishing spots of Pettiford Creek. Plans to provide a kayak launch and wildlife viewing area to the public are in the works for the same area- assuming that the Town Council is awarded another State Grant at the tune of over $67,000.

Agents Giving Back to the Community

This Holiday season, Bluewater agents, employees, and owners were able to come together and help families in need along Carteret County. We all understand how fortunate we are to be able to live, work and play in this beautiful community- but also how important it is to help those that are less fortunate. We agreed that families suffering from the effects of Hurricane Florence were a high-priority to assist, and that a monetary contribution could make things a little easier for a lot of families as Thanksgiving and Christmas come and go.

Food Pantries at area high schools were brought up as a great resource for young adults to discreetly take home food and help contribute to family meals. There’s no charge, or sign-up fee for the usage of these pantries, and the school’s Exceptional Children programs go to purchase and stock these food banks when the funds arise. As a team, we came together in about one week and raised over $1200. The contribution was matched by the gracious owners of Bluewater and we were able to donate $1,000 to both East & West Carteret High Schools, with an additional $211 going to the Marine Science & Technology Early College in Morehead City.

Pat Copeland, Broker in Charge of Bluewater Real Estate Atlantic Beach presented a check for $1000 to West Carteret High School’s Food Pantry this Holiday Season.

Bluewater Real Estate agent, Allison Bernauer present a $1000 check to the East Carteret High School Food Pantry program.

Sandy Futral Receives Recognition for Community Service

Hard Work Rarely Goes Unnoticed

At the annual end of the year meeting held by the Carteret County Association of REALTORS®, our own Sandy Futral was presented with the Ben Ball Community Service Award, which recognizes members that make outstanding and dedicated contributions to the betterment of our local community.

The acknowledgment is certainly well-deserved as Sandy has been hard at work supporting our community for the past several years. This year, in particular, was special to her, while she served as Chair of the local association’s Public Relations Committee. Below, you can read more about just a few of the events and organizations she’s focused on over the course of the year.

Swinging for Scholarships

Through Sandy’s leadership- the local board of REALTORS® was able to host its 1st Annual ‘Swing for Scholarships’ Golf Tournament Fundraiser. The event was held on August 9th and marked as a success from the 1st drive. The funds raised from this inaugural event will go to benefit members of the organization directly through the CCAR Scholarship fund. Every year, soon-to-be High School graduates with a guardian as a member of CCAR have the opportunity to be awarded scholarships for college. Sandy and the Public Relations Committee hope to give more scholarships than ever this upcoming Spring since the event was so well attended.

Hurricane Florence Relief

Our area directly felt the impacts of Hurricane Florence, which brought several days of rain into our area with heavy winds and high tides. Many families around the county were displaced due to flooding and/or roof damage, but Sandy and the CCAR team were quick to offer their support. The CCAR Board office was used as a drop-off destination for supplies such as food, water, clothing, and cleaning supplies. Members of the local community gathered together to distribute the collections to those most affected by the storm, and offer their services to anyone needing temporary housing, or those who were searching for qualified contractors to begin the rebuilding process.

Toys for Tots

For many years, Sandy has coordinated with the United States Marine Corps and hundreds of local businesses to designate themselves as a Toys for Tots drop-off location. The USMC does a great job of collecting and distributing these generous donations to the children that need them most throughout the course of the Holiday season. Toys for Tots boxes can be found at all of our Bluewater Real Estate offices- we welcome you to stop by and drop a new and unwrapped present for a child in need.

Backpacks for Kids

In addition to an Annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ event, where local Real Estate offices and similar businesses gather donations of school supplies for area educators, Sandy is heavily involved with the Backpacks for Kids team. Every week, a group of dedicated volunteers gathers together to combine a bag full of donated canned goods, fruits, snacks, nutritional bars, and healthy drinks. At the end of the week, children of low-income families take a bag home to enjoy with their families over the weekend. It’s the little things like this that make Sandy so passionate to help, as those students with free or reduced lunch options are often forgotten about over the weekends. A significant amount of time, money, and effort is contributed by Sandy for causes like this and so much more.

If you see Sandy, be sure to congratulate her on receiving the prestigious award, and thank her for everything she does in the community.
