Gallants Point first originated when John Galland was born in 1698. Galland was the stepson of Governor Charles Eden of whom was the second governor of colonial North Carolina in 1713. When Galland turned the age of 28 he received a patent for acreage in Core Sound. The acreage that was north of Beaufort became known as Gallands Neck, Gallant’s Point or Gallant’s Creek. It is believed that Gallant’s Point was originally spelled Golland. A year later,  John Galland became Clerk of Court for Carteret County and maintained the position until his alleged death in 1730.
