Other Neighbors – the Cherry Point Area

In addition to MCAS Cherry Point being near the small town of Havelock, there are a number of other nearby outlying communities outside the Cherry Point area that offer activities, shops, restaurants and more for the amuseument of the troops.

To the west on Highway 70, New Bern’s special events take place throughout the year, and the biggest festival is in the fall, the MumFest. North Carolina’s oldest city is also the home of Tryon Palace, with lavish gardens and continuous guided tours, and also the Craven County Convention and Visitors Center.

Carteret County lies immediately to the east of Havelock and the Cherry Point area, and contains, among attractions too numerous to list, the beaches of Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Salter Path, Indian Beach and Emerald Isle. Morehead City is also nearby, which is the “city” of the Crystal Coast with numerous restaurants, shopping, activities, services and more. For those who enjoy a laidback pace, Beaufort with its historic Beaufort Waterfront and Swansboro with its waterfront of quaint shops are also fun places to visit on a Saturday afternoon.

There are a few big festivals in the Crystal Coast in the fall, including the Mullet Festival in Swansboro and the North Carolina Seafood Festival in Morehead City.
