Trash & Recycling Rules

The Town of Emerald Isle provides these services through a contract with Waste Industries, a private company.

Containers Required

Every business location and owner or occupant of a house or residence in the Emerald Isle residential area must provide a sufficient number of containers. Each residential rental unit must have a minimum of thirty (30) gallons of solid waster containment per bedroom. All containers must be rolled to the street for the appropriate collection day and rolled back within twenty four hours after collection.

Recycling

Recyclables can be co-mingled in your recycling container(s). Items permitted are:

• Glass: Green, brown and clear
• Paper: Newspaper, magazines, phone books, white mixed
• Cans: Aluminum, steel, tin
• Cardboard: Corrugated
• Plastic Containers: PET bottles

In addition to curbside recycling, the town provides recycle bins at Merchants Park located at 8401 Emerald Drive, Emerald Isle.

White Goods/Large Appliances

These items are picked up on the second Friday of each month at the curbside. The town of Emerald Charge charges $10 for item picked up. You must purchase a sticker from the town and apply the sticker to each item to be picked up. You also are given the option to take your appliance to the Carteret County drop site at Fire tower Road off Highway 58 North. You must show identification that you are an Emerald Isle resident or property owner. If so, there is no charge for this service.

Brush & Yard Debris

Brush and yard debris are collected on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. You must call the Emerald Isle Town Hall to schedule the pickup of brush and yard debris.

Since this debris must be placed in a regular garbage truck, you will need to follow these simple rules: All limbs must be cut no longer than 4 feet and no larger than 5 inches in diameter. Leaves, clippings and pampas grass must be bagged. All debris should be placed at the street by your property and not on vacant lots or street ends. Please also separate items such as bagged leaves and limbs.

Construction/Demolition Debris

The Town of Emerald Isle trash collection does not include construction debris to include shingles, lumber, siding, sheet rock. You must make arrangements to have these items removed yourself. Residents or property owners can take small amounts of these items to the Waste Industries site on Highway 58 North. Turn left on Fire Tower Road or they can be called at 252-393-6509 for further details. Larger items can be brought to the County Waste Management site at Hibbs Road, Newport, NC. Schedules for Household Garbage Pickup:

West of Black Skimmer Street (Oceanside) and Live Oak Street (Sound side): Tuesdays and Fridays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Recycling on Fridays. Labor Day to Memorial Day is Tuesday for garbage and Friday for recycling.

East of Black Skimmer Street (Oceanside) and Live Oak Street (Sound side): Mondays and Thursdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Recycling on Thursday. Labor Day to Memorial Day is Monday for garbage and Thursday for recycling.
