There many stories of how the area got its name, though most popular is that it was adopted from an old post office used by lumber workers in the early 1900s. Topsail Island remains a charming and quaint area, with only one traffic light throughout the 26 mile long barrier island. Like many beach towns, there is a significant swell in the summer population, roughly 35,000 people and nearly 10 times the year round population of 3,500 residents. Area residents are very protective of the local wildlife, specifically the area turtle population.
